About Gir
Gir is the only place on the planet where you can see wild Asiatic lions. There are roughly 600 of them, distributed across the Gir national park and the surrounding protected landscape in southern Gujarat. They were down to twenty individuals at one point in the early twentieth century. The recovery from twenty animals to six hundred is one of the great Indian conservation stories, on a par with the rhino recovery at Kaziranga and the tiger reintroduction at Panna.
The park covers about 1,400 square kilometres of dry deciduous forest, scrub, and rocky terrain. The landscape is genuinely different from the central Indian tiger reserves. Drier, more open, and lit by the kind of harsh Gujarati light that produces dramatic photographs in the early morning and late afternoon. The Asiatic lion is also genuinely different from the African lion (smaller mane on the males, more pronounced belly fold, tighter prides, and a calmness around vehicles that every naturalist who has worked here remarks on). A gir lion safari does not feel like an African safari. It feels like its own thing, and the difference is part of what makes Gir distinctive.
A gir safari with us means a guide who has been working these forests for at least a decade and a lodge close enough to the gate that the early starts work properly. The lions here are also the entire reason to come, and we structure the trip around maximising your time in the productive zones at the right hours.
Wildlife of Gir
The headline is the lion, obviously. But Gir is also unusually rich in other species, and the lion is by no means the only reason to visit.
- Asiatic lions, around 600, the only wild population on Earth
- Indian leopards, present in healthy numbers and often seen in the buffer zones (Gir is one of the more reliable Indian parks for leopard sightings)
- Sloth bears, particularly in the rocky areas
- Striped hyena, occasionally visible in the more open zones
- Indian wolf, rare but present
- Sambar, chital, nilgai, four-horned antelope (chousingha), and chinkara
- Wild boar
- Marsh crocodiles in the Kamleshwar Dam area
- More than 300 bird species, including the white-backed vulture, the painted sandgrouse, and the Indian eagle owl
The lions here also coexist with the local Maldhari pastoralist community in a way that is genuinely uncommon in modern wildlife management. The Maldharis live inside the park with their cattle, and the lions and the pastoralists have worked out a generations-long accommodation that is one of the more interesting human-wildlife coexistence stories in the world.
Safari Experience at Gir
The park runs gir forest safari drives in open jeeps with a JJ naturalist and a Forest Department guide. Each jeep takes a maximum of six guests, and our default is to keep them private.
Gir has one main entry gate (Sasan) and several safari zones, with permits allocated per zone per session. The booking process is fairly tightly controlled by the Gujarat Forest Department, and getting the right zone allocations on the right dates is the single biggest practical reason to book through us rather than try to do it yourself. Gir safari booking is one of the most over-subscribed permit systems in India, and DIY guests routinely end up with the wrong zones on the wrong days.
Each drive runs roughly three hours (slightly shorter than the central Indian tiger parks). Morning drives start at gate-opening time (6:00 AM in summer, 6:30 in winter). Afternoon drives go from around 3:00 PM until just after sunset.
A 3-night gir jungle safari trip with us means six game drives total. Most of our guests see lions on at least three of them.
Best Time to Visit Gir
The park is open from 16 October to 15 June, with the formal lion-viewing season being December to June. The monsoon (mid-June to mid-October) closes the gates entirely.
December to February is comfortable. Mornings start cool (10 to 14 degrees in December at 6 AM, warming to 25 by midday). The lions are visible in the open zones, the bird life is at its peak, and the overall conditions are at their best. This is the window we recommend for first-time Gir guests.
March to mid-June is hot. Afternoons cross 40 degrees in May and can touch 45. The sightings sharpen because the lions concentrate around the water sources, but the heat is genuinely difficult for guests who do not handle high temperatures well. If your priority is the photograph and you can handle the temperature, this is the most productive window.
How to Reach Gir
Rajkot is the nearest major airport, 160 km from the park. About 4 hours by road. Daily direct flights to Rajkot from Delhi, Mumbai, and Hyderabad.
Diu is a smaller airport option, about 110 km away (3 hours by road). Useful for guests who want to combine Gir with a beach extension at Diu.
Junagadh is the nearest railway station, about 60 km from the park. Trains from Mumbai take 14 to 16 hours overnight.
For international guests, the easiest routing is into Mumbai or Delhi, then a domestic connection to Rajkot. We arrange the airport pickup and the road transfer with the lodge as part of the booking.
Where to Stay in Gir
We have a shortlist of about six gir resorts across three lodge tiers, and we have stayed at every one.
Luxury
The top-tier lodges in Gir include some of the most distinctive wildlife properties in western India, with naturalist programmes that draw on the Maldhari coexistence story and offer guided cultural visits in addition to the formal safaris.
Mid-range
Genuinely good lodges that combine comfort with proximity to the Sasan gate. Most of our Gir guests end up here.
Best value
Clean, simple, well-located properties for guests who care more about the safari than the lodge.
We will recommend specific properties once we know your dates and budget.

Gir Safari FAQs
What are the gir safari timings?
Two sessions per day. Morning starts at gate-opening time (6:00 AM in summer, 6:30 in winter). Afternoon starts around 3:00 PM and runs until sunset.
How many lions are at Gir?
Around 600, distributed across the gir lion sanctuary core and the surrounding protected landscape. The population has been growing steadily under intensive protection and is now considered stable.
Is an asiatic lion safari different from an African lion safari?
Yes, in several ways. The Asiatic lion is smaller than the African lion, has a less prominent mane, and lives in tighter pride structures. The terrain in Gir is dry deciduous forest rather than open savannah, which makes the sightings more intimate and less panoramic. The lions are also notably calm around vehicles, often more so than their African cousins. Most international guests who have done African safaris find Gir to be a meaningfully different experience rather than a downgrade.
What is the gir safari price range?
The gir safari cost depends on the lodge tier, the season, and the duration. Premium lodges in peak season (December to February) push the number up. Rather than quote a range that would be wrong for half our guests, we send a written and itemised quote within 24 hours of an enquiry. There is no deposit until you say yes.
Can I book Gir directly without an operator?
The Gujarat Forest Department portal handles gir online booking for permits, but the Gir permit system is one of the most tightly controlled and over-subscribed in India. DIY guests routinely end up with the wrong zones on the wrong days, or with no permits at all on busy weekends. The booking is the single biggest reason most of our Gir guests come to us rather than try to handle it themselves.
How many safaris should I do?
Three nights (six drives) is the floor. Four nights (eight drives) is the sweet spot for guests who want to give the lions multiple chances and see the park properly.
Will I see a lion?
Probably. The sighting rate on a 3-night trip is around 90%, which is one of the highest reliable wildlife encounter rates in India.
